Her father, Carey R. Griffeth and mother Nancy, were of the Town of Lysander (same county), sold land in Lot 83 in the year 1833. How long they had been there is unknown to the compiler. Miss Lesley E. Voorhees of Baldwinsville, N.Y., traced most all of the information concerning the Griffeths, as reported here.

From information in what is below, the family of son "Aron" lived with lone widower, Cary R. Griffeth. There were then four of Aron's family in above listing.

"Aaron Griffeth died April 3, 1859, ae. 34-6-7; buried in old yard, Riverside Cemetery, Baldwinsville, N.Y.

After Aaron Griffeth died, his widow married Edward Williams. She and her son, Wm. H., are buried in Baldwinsville, N.Y., but in another part of the cemetery from Aaron's grave.

Mary Cornell Griffeth Williams lived at Sand Springs in the town of Van Buren. She died Sept. 29, 1896, ae. 73 years." (Were she and Ezra Cornell related?)

Parts in "quotes" signed by L.E.V.

Miss Voorhees and Mr. LeRoy Griffeth have furnished data on later descendants. He lived at 2704 S.E. Kelly Street, Portland 2, Oregon, in 1953. He gave some data on younger descendants. At that time he gave daughter of Raymond, brother of LeRoy, address: Eleanor Griffith Coulton (Mrs. Donald Coulton), Bangor, Maine. Also a daughter of Frances, address: Frances Griffeth Wilhelm, Sherwood, Oregon.

When Samuel Molby, 1815, and wife named a son "Isaac Carey," their Bible record shows they spelled it Carey.

"Family Record of Cary Griffith, b. 1849, compiled from 'Our Bible,' by LeRoy Griffeth, date Dec. 1953.

                     F. A. Molby, Baldwin, Kansas, Aug. 23, 1954.

Samuel Molby was a farmer in Van Buren until 1852, then a merchant in a general store for twelve years, then a farmer for the remaining years of his life. In Baldwinsville he had the store building that came to be called the "Pig's Ear"--it is still standing, 1953, but very old and dilapidated. It faces the Barge Canal on the south side of the river. It appears that Mr. Molby was unpopular "because of his opposition to the method of the Civil War for settling the slavery question, at least he was a northern democrat, and this hurt his trade so that he sold out and went to Michigan." He may have hired substitutes to serve in the war in place of his sons, as it is not known that any of them took part in the conflict.

Samuel Molby was a strong and fearless man. It is told of him that he seized an axe helve and went to the door of his store and warned a mob of angry men that he would brain the first man who

*See p. S86-7 for obituary.

attempted to enter. They were after a nit wit who had run into the store when he angered them with his remarks about the Civil War. It is said that no man ventured to come into the store in opposition to the muscle and axe helve. Samuel was about 6 feet and 3 inches tall in stocking feet, weight 265 pounds.

He held a commission as Captain of Company G of the 75th Regiment of the National Guards of the State of New York during the Civil War. Mrs. Wm. McKelvey, Waterville, Kansas, a grandniece of Samuel, has a certificate of enlistment issued by Samuel Molby to her father, Asahel Earll.

Samuel's wife "Rillar" was smaller than the average woman.

Samuel was supervisor of the Town of Van Buren, 1851. Fred A Molby of Baldwin, Kansas, has photographs of Samuel, Rillar and of each of their children. Also has the Bible that was Samuel's mother's, and the Bible that was Samuel's. A great grandson of Samuel, Samuel James Molby, III, of Kansas City, Mo., has a beautiful watch with gold face and gold hands, that was Samuel's (1815) watch about 1854.

His farm where his children were born, is the one in Van Buren on the East Dead Creek road where the Lincoln Kratzers now (1953) live. Samuel sold this farm to his 1st cousin, Lyman Maltby, on Sept. 7, 1852. Lyman willed it to his son Herman Maltby. In 1924, the Kratzers bought the farm.

At Hillsdale, Michigan, is a large sandstone monument in Oak Grove cemetery, over the graves of Samuel, his wife and several sons and daughters. Samuel Molby died July 28, 1872, at Hillsdale and his wife died Sept. 7, 1873, at Hillsdale.

The will of Samuel Molby was probated at Hillsdale. He had purchased a farm 5 miles south from Hillsdale, the deed recorded, March 31, 1864.

Children of Samuel and Orillas Griffeth Molby:
CGB-GEA-a. Sarah Jane Molby, b. Mar. 26, 1837.
CGB-GEA-B. Chester Jonathan Molby, b. Nov. 4, 1838.
CGB-GEA-C. David Benjamin " b. Aug. 26, 1840; d. June 30, 1846.
CGB-GEA-D. Isaac Carey " b. Nov. 11, 1842; d. May 17, 1880.
CGB-GEA-E. Samuel James " b. Sept. 9, 1844.
CGB-GEA-F. Martin Edward " b. Nov. 3, 1846.
CGB-GEA-G. Joseph Pharoah " b. Jan. 13, 1849.
CGB-GEA-h. Nancy Mariah " b. Jan. 28, 1851.

Please note that the given names of children listed here are typical of given names in the families descended from the "Emigrant" William (1) Maltbie. It is believed that Jonathan (4) Maltbie (1751) born at Branford, Conn., married a Lucy Culver, b. 1754 at Branford or Wallingford. We do not know of a marriage record for either of these persons, but their births are of unquestioned record. It is to be observed that the known daughter of the Jonathan found at Hebrontown (and Camillus), N. Y. was named Lucy. Also that her brother and wife, Jacob and Sarah (Miner) Maltby, named their daughter LUCY. It seems probable that in Jonathan of Camillus, N. Y., we have the Jonathan Maltbie whom Rev. Jonathan (4) Maltbie of New Haven wrote that "He married a Culver and went to Lenox, Mass.". See Appendix II in this compilation for a copy made from the hand-written MS. of Rev. Jonathan (4), the original of which the compiler owns.

Query. Did Jonathan Maltby have a son Samuel living when he moved to Camillus? Miss Lesley E. Voorhees of Baldwinsville, N.Y., sent this item: Lot 79, Book 123, p. 483, Onondaga Co., N.Y. Records 1856: "William Maltby bought land from S. B. Rowe and Ano in Camillus, New York." The compiler has from the New York Evangelist, Feb. 6, 1868, "Obituary, Maltby at the residence of her brother, J. H. Rowe, in Hillsdale, Michigan, Jan. 15, 1868, Mrs. Laura in her 75th year. Born in Connecticut, 1790, she went at the age of ten to central New York. At the age of 17 she married Samuel Maltby. He died in four years. Her first child was a son." Census reports of 1790 and 1800 do not preclude a son other than the known sons. This Samuel died before four sons sold by deed a part of Jonathan's land in the Town of Camillus, March 18, 1825, recorded Nov. 14, 1829. Records Book QQ, page 3. (Latter item by Miss L.E.V.)
